Visualising Your Global Network

Alumni networks spread across cities and countries, making it difficult for graduates to know who is nearby. While list-based directories are helpful, a searchable alumni map provides a visual way to display network density and help users find local contacts for networking or mentoring.

How Geocoding Automates the Map

Creating a map manually is impossible for large directories. Instead, modern platforms use background geocoding. When an alumnus updates their profile location (e.g. adding 'Nairobi' or 'London'), the system queries a geocoding API like OpenStreetMap in the background to retrieve coordinates. These coordinates are saved to the profile, plotting the user on the map automatically without manual input.

Building Local Connections

An interactive school directory map allows users to zoom into specific regions and click on clusters to see profiles. This is particularly useful for graduates moving to a new city, looking for local career advice, or planning regional events. By transforming a simple database into a map, you make geographical connections visible and accessible.
